MLS Academic Advisory Group

The MLS Academic Advisory Group is a representative group of the larger MLS Academic Library members, who provide feedback to MLS consultants regarding CE workshop ideas, issues, policies, and concerns of special libraries.

MLS Networking Groups for Academic Libraries

MLS sponsored Academic Library Networking meetings are offered throughout the year on topics of interest to Special libraries.  Members are invited to attend and join in the discussion.  Check for future meetings or contact the MLS Consultants at consultants@mls.lib.il.us with suggestions for future topics.
 
Local History Special Interest Group (SIG)
The Local History Special Interest Group is a forum for MLS librarians and staff interested in the greater Chicago metropolitan area who are involved with the development and maintenance of our respective libraries' local history collections. The group meets quarterly at member libraries.

Metropolitan Academic Reference and Instruction Librarians (MARIL)
A networking group for reference and instruction librarians at academic libraries in the Chicago area open to any academic reference or instruction librarian. Subscribe to the group at acadref@mls.lib.il.us.   The member contact is Nancy Murillo at n-murillo1@neiu.edu  The MLS staff contact is Kathy Roegge at roeggek@mls.lib.il.us.  Meetings are held three times a year in the MLS Chicago office. Middle Managers Networking Group 
A networking group for managers, supervisors, and department heads in MLS libraries. Membership in the group is open to any manager or supervisor in an MLS member library who is not the library director. Subscribe to the group at midmanagers@mls.lib.il.us.  The member contact is Portia Latalladi at platalla@chipublib.org.  MLS staff contact is Kathy Roegge at roeggek@mls.lib.il.us.  Meetings are held every two months at an area location. Reflist

Technology Managers Networking Group
Offers support, sharing of best practices, tips and tricks, and discusses issues surrounding technology in the library for those whose key job functions include managing the technology infrastructure of their library. Members include persons responsible for managing and administering the technology and/or network in an MLS member library, including professional IT persons, staff dedicated to technology support in member libraries, librarians with de facto responsibility for the library technology, and/or contracted technology service providers for a member library.  Includes representatives from MLS and SWAN.  Subscribe to the mailing list at technologymanagers@mls.lib.il.us.  The member contact is Ron Friedman, Northlake Public Library District, friedman [at] northlakelibrary [dot] org. Internship Central
The MLS Internship Central database is an online library internship posting service of available internships in libraries in Illinois.  Anyone may search the listing of internships, and Illinois libraries who are members of an Illinois library system may apply for an account to post internships.

MLS Academic Libraries Mailing List

External Organizations for Academic Libraries

IACRL
IACRL is a forum of the Illinois Library Association (ILA) and a chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).  Academic libraries in this document are defined as college, community, technical and junior colleges, university libraries, as well as research libraries not affiliated with academic institutions. The mission of the IACRL is to promote the interests of academic libraries and the personnel of those libraries, to enhance the abilities of academic library personnel, to identify and meet the information needs of current and potential library users, to develop and promote leadership to the academic library community.

CARLI
The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) serves over 93% of Illinois higher education students, faculty, and staff at 151 member institutions. Among the many benefits of CARLI membership are the I-Share integrated library system that serves 76 institutions; E-resources brokering, with over 1,000 discounted subscriptions to electronic journals and other resources in fiscal year 2008; the Illinois Library Delivery Service (ILDS), offering 24-hour delivery among 141 CARLI libraries and all of the state’s regional library systems; and the Book Digitization Initiative, a partnership with the Open Content Alliance to provide a digitization opportunity for Illinois academic and research libraries.
